How to sort through a lifetime of memories when you’re preparing to move

If you’ve lived in the same place for many years and are transitioning to a new home, it can be hard to sort through a lifetime of memories.

Every time you open up your cupboard to pack, you pull out a coffee cup and think about the special friend who gave it to you. Or, you come across your kids’ elementary school artwork in a dusty box and can’t bring yourself to throw it away.

It’s okay to feel nostalgic! This is a normal part of the moving process.

Give yourself space to grieve, and remember that you don’t have to get rid of everything.

As you’re sorting, put things in a “definitely keep” pile, a “maybe keep” pile, and a “donate / sell” pile. Take a second look through the “maybe” pile once the emotions have passed.

It might be easier if you don’t have to make these decisions on your own. Invite a family member or close friend to help you sort and pack!
